Launceston is the third oldest city in Australia and the second oldest in Tasmania, The capital Hobart being the oldest. Unlike the two oldest cities in Australia Sydney and Hobart, Launceston was built with a more spacious plan.
The central city was taken directly off the plan of the city of Launceston England using the same names and grid. This did not take into consideration the colonial village's topography, hence an unusual splitting of a street due to a cliff near the city centre.

Built in a valley dug by ancient glacial activity the city is quite hilly. One of its most prominent features is a gorge near the centre that is the remains of a volcanic rim, this is now a public park for swimming, rock climbing, bushwalking and quiet strolls.

The architecture is mainly from around the early 1800's onwards and reflects the money in the city at that time. Colonial architecture can be found outside the city and surrounding villages. Wikipedia.
