Tasmania is a small island 240 km off the south east coast of mainland Australia. Its geographic size is a little smaller than Ireland or West Virginia, Area: 64,519 sq km, Population aprox: 479,000.
European settlement began in earnest in around 1803 Under its original name of Van Dieman's Land, it was colonised as a penal settlement, one of England's cruellest.
The history of Tasmania is a brutal and barbarous one, of mans inhumanity to man. Tragically the original inhabitants of the island did not survive the slaughter that followed, an entire race of people annihilated. The white prisoners fared a little better, but only just, many dying from the harsh treatment dealt out by the authorities.
Today Tasmania is a far different place, known for its natural beauty, for fine food, the arts and a civilised pace of life. The cruel history is every where to be seen but now only in the beautiful heritage of convict architecture.
